Paul Roesser is a supporter of the Liam Foundation, a nonprofit organization devoted to facilitating the causes of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Established by a California family whose son was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, the Liam Foundation is committed to promoting a positive outlook on the disease, raising awareness, and working toward finding a cure in any way possible. Countless individuals and families have benefited from the Liam Foundation’s activities, as donations go directly toward funding the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s pioneering research. Additionally, the Liam Foundation provides fiscal assistance to medical care centers across the country, offering financing that enables advancements in drug therapy. Its primary focus is on celebrating life and finding a cure for cystic fibrosis in the near future. The Liam Foundation proves truly exemplary in its approach to making cystic fibrosis a disease of the past.

This year, the Liam Foundation raised $83,000 to fight cystic fibrosis at the Hollywood Glam Gala, which that took place in Rancho Santa Fe, California. On June 12, 2010, celebrities, members of the media, local families, and friends of the foundation gathered at the Morgan Run Club and Resort to celebrate the Liam Foundation’s accomplishments. On August 7, the Liam Foundation spearheaded Race to the Cure, an exciting event for teens. The foundation and its supporters are looking forward to September 20, when the First Annual Celebration of Life Golf Tournament will be held.

Based in Rochester, New York, the University of Rochester Medical Center remains one of the country’s leading health care and disease research institutions. Among its achievements, the University of Rochester Medical Center created a vaccine that eradicates a leading cause of meningitis in preschoolers and prevents infection by pneumococcal bacteria, which cause illnesses such as ear infections and pneumonia. The University of Rochester Medical Center is also renowned for its study of cancer at the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center. Most recently, the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center garnered two large federal grants totaling almost two million dollars in funding for stem cell research. This summer, clinicians at the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center will be able to continue their exploration into the particular stem cells that cause cancer. The researchers are examining the idea that mutations at the stem cell level cause tumor formation and lead to cancer. By studying patients undergoing therapy for acute myelocytic leukemia, James P. Wilmot Cancer Center researchers will identify whether leukemia stem cell (LSC) properties remain stable or change. Data acquired from the study will help to determine the best course of action in eliminating the residual cancer that remains in the body after aggressive therapy.

The Fountainhead, a novel written by Ayn Rand, is a widely read and debated book. The novel champions the merits of an individualist society and exemplifies Objectivism, a philosophy Ayn Rand created. Objectivism holds a number of principles, and one is that a sense of moral purpose can only be derived rationally from self-interest and that societies must be structured to defer to individual rights. Ayn Rand’s Objectivism considers reality to be what is perceived through the senses. Therefore, reality is not defined by the individual (and thus subjective), but by a shared actuality, which exists so that people can acquire knowledge of it objectively. In this way, Ayn Rand envisioned reality as something for human beings to achieve or realize through their individual journeys. The Fountainhead, Ayn Rand’s first novel, exemplifies this philosophy through a fictional narrative about a bold architect, Howard Roark, who aspires to construct modern buildings in defiance of the traditional style. Roark’s struggle to triumph over what he holds to be inferior architecture is illustrated by various characters he encounters along the way. Ayn Rand portrays archetypes of human characters, and Roark exemplifies Ayn Rand’s ideal of an independent thinker, who resists subordination from the powerful pressures of society’s status quo. Ayn Rand depicts Roark as a symbol of individualism, which prevails over collectivism. Roark’s first major battle involves his architecture school, which expels him for violating the institution’s traditions. Ayn Rand portrays Roark as a willful character, who is prepared to struggle for what he believes to be right. The novel met resistance from the publishing world, facing 12 rejections before finally being published by Bobbs-Merrill Company. With mixed prophecies of whether the book would succeed, The Fountainhead has enjoyed undeniable success since its publication in 1943. In 2008, the novel had sold over 6.5 million copies. In 1945, King Features Syndicate proposed that Ayn Rand create an illustrated version of the novel that would be published for syndication in newspapers. Ayn Rand oversaw the editing and approved every illustration of her characters. Frank Godwin illustrated the 30-part series that ran in over 35 newspapers. In 1949, Warner Brothers released the American film, The Fountainhead, starring Gary Cooper. Based on the bestselling novel, the screenplay, written by Ayn Rand, became a Hollywood film, directed by King Vidor.

Southwestern Law School’s award-winning Bullocks Wilshire building was completed in 1929 and exhibits a classic art deco architecture style. Designed by a dynamic team of local architects, the building was envisioned by John and Donald Parkinson, while Eleanor Lemaire and Jock Peters are credited with the interior design. Inside the building, the porte-cochere mural was painted by Herman Sachs. Originally, the Bullocks Wilshire building was intended to function as a luxury department store for John Bullock. Located in what was then a mostly residential neighborhood, the department store catered to shoppers who had cars and wanted to avoid the congested downtown Los Angeles shopping districts. The department store provided valets to welcome patrons and park their cars, as they entered the magnificent building. The stunning design allowed for the department store to cater to Los Angeles’ high society. In the 1970s, Bullock’s began to open remote branches, in order to create a broader market that included more than purely luxury items. Maintaining high-end stores, the new branches accommodated customers in Palm Springs and La Jolla, among other locations. The Bullocks Wilshire customer base began to decline when other luxury stores moved to the west side of L.A. Macy’s acquired ownership of the department store, and in 1992, the building suffered major damage during the L.A. riots: rioters shattered every display case on the building’s first floor. Southwestern Law School, a longtime neighbor to the landmark building, acquired Bullocks Wilshire in 1993, restoring most of the structure to its original state. The law school made natural adaptations to the building, so that it could function as a central part of the school. In 1978, the building was listed in the National Register of Historical Places. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bullocks_Wilshire
